We Live On the Hayward Fault
The Redwood Heights neighborhood is situated along the Hayward Fault Zone. According to the US Geological Survey, scientists are convinced that the Hayward Fault has reached the point where a powerful, damaging earthquake can be expected at any time (USGS website). In light of this natural hazard, it is important that we are prepared for earthquakes, as well as other emergencies.
Fortunately, the City of Oakland runs Communities of Oakland Respond to Emergencies (CORE), a free emergency preparedness and response training program of the Oakland Fire Department. CORE provides free emergency preparedness training for individuals, neighborhood groups, and community-based organizations in Oakland. We are working towards increased preparedness in starting in Redwood Heights, and invite you to join us!
Emergency Preparedness: What Can You Do To Be Prepared For An Emergency?
1. Build your own emergency kit and prepare for your personal emergency response.
Ready.gov has a number of resources to help with personal emergency response preparedness.
The Oakland CORE program also hosts an online Personal Emergency Preparedness training on the third Thursday of the month. Please see the CORE website for more information.
The Redwood Heights Association is also working to schedule Personal Emergency Preparedness Training at the Redwood Heights Recreation Center in 2024. Stay tuned for more information!
2. Take Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training
Through the CORE Program, the Oakland Fire Department offers CERT training on what to do before, during, and after a disaster. CERT volunteers learn how to assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when emergency responders are not immediately available to help. Basic skills covered in the class include team organization, fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations.
Below are the scheduled dates for the remaining CERT trainings offered in 2024 (full calendar available in this pdf and registration link here):
Dates | Type of Training |
May 3 – 5 | 3-Day Accelerated Delivery |
Jun 19 – 23 | 3-Day Adult Accelerated Delivery |
Aug 23 – 25 | 3-Day Adult Accelerated Delivery |
Oct 7 – Nov 3 | Hybrid (Online/In-person) Delivery |
3. Join the Redwood Heights Association Emergency Volunteers (RHEV)
Join our team, and help us increase the number and distribution of CERT-trained neighbors in and across Redwood Heights.
